"Erectile dysfunction" term means man's inability to get a firm erection, not a constant ability to get it or even utter lack of erection. Because of these different definitions of male impotence it is sometimes very difficult to identify the rates of erectile dysfunction.

In the United States the National Institutes of Health affirms that about 15 million among 30 million men have some erection problems. This lets us to judge that approximately 50% of men have at least once suffered from male impotence.

The cases of erection problems increase with the age. About 5% of men at the age of 40 have chronic erectile dysfunction, at the age of 65 25% of men suffer from this disease. Occasional problems with erection occur in 50% of men aged from 40 to 70.

In 70% cases of chronic erectile dysfunction the cause for it is this or that disease. They include kidney disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis, alcoholism, and many others. According to statistics 35 - 50% of men suffering from diabetes have some time experienced male impotence. The second place of reasons (10–20% of cases) for male impotence is given to various psychological factors, such as stress, apathy, anxiety, nervousness, depression, etc.
